Light one Candle...
Mentor a Child!

Mentoring is...
  • ...a supportive relationship between an adult and a child to enhance the child's educational, social and personal growth
  • ...an effective way to pass along life skills needed to succeed in school, at work, and in society
  • ...a time honored way to build character, confidence and self esteem
  • ...a strategy for repairing the fraying fabric of society by strengthening the bonds between youth and adults
  • ...a chance to pass on the gifts we ourselves have received in the form of encouragement, knowledge, experience and inspiration
  • ...an opportunity to broaden a child's vision of the future and all the choices that are available

What mentors do:

  • Make a commitment for 1 year
  • Give written permission for a criminal background check
  • Complete a brief training program
  • Agree to attend a mentor discussion group once every 2 months
  • Communicate with teachers through a mentor journal
  • Receive ongoing support from program leaders and assistance with questions and concerns
  • Offer nonjudgmental, compassionate support
  • Listen to their student's concerns and experiences, cheering for small improvements & achievements

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Ready to get started?

Why consider mentoring?

  • Was there a mentor who made a difference in your life? Ready to pass that gift on?
  • Have you noticed that by the time we get really good at parenting, our children are grown? Want to put those hard earned skills to use?
  • Did you have to overcome some difficult challenges as a child?
  • Do you worry about children who might fall behind and have difficulty catching up with their peers?
  • Would you like to help a child who is struggling in school to experience more successes and begin to believe in himself or herself?
"But where was I to start? The world is so vast, I shall start with the country I know best, my own. But my country is so very large. I had better start with my town. But my town, too, is large. I had best start with my street. No: my home. No: my family. Never mind, I shall start with myself."
Elie Wiesel
