The LaFayette Board of Education

The Board of Education of the Lafayette Central School District is aware of the concerns that have been expressed by various members of the School District community, and, in particular, those of the Onondaga Nation related to the leadership position at the Onondaga Nation School.  It has been brought to the Board’s attention that certain incorrect information has been spread throughout the community, and for that reason, the Board of Education wishes to clarify the facts regarding the hiring of a principal for the Onondaga Nation School. The Board of Education has the interest of all of its students and staff in mind when it ensures that qualified building leaders are hired for all of its schools. Candidates go through a rigorous screening and interview process to ensure that the best highly qualified individual is selected for a principal position.  In the recent hiring process for the principal position at the Onondaga Nation School, the District sought a qualified, experienced educational leader with the appropriate certifications and demonstrated leadership experience.  All District stakeholders had a voice in the process including ONS staff members, parents, Nation representatives as well as District administrators.

Simone Thornton is a valued teacher in our School District.  She applied for the position of principal at the Onondaga Nation School.  During the course of the candidate review process it was discovered Ms. Thornton did not possess the appropriate New York State certification to be considered as a school building principal. The District advised Ms. Thornton that she did not possess the proper certification for the position.  As with any District employee seeking to pursue a leadership position, the District has advised Ms. Thornton on the process to be followed and continues to be willing to assist her in obtaining the proper certification required to be a building principal in the future.  In collaboration with the School District community and leadership, we will continue to strive towards an inclusive environment that puts the quality education of our students at the center of all decisions.
