LaFayette Alumni Recap
Summer 2010

The 2010 LaFayette lacrosse alumni game rolled around on August 12th and you couldn’t have asked for a better Saturday. The weather was great! 25 boys & girls from the community attended the free youth clinic led by the youth coaches. And over 50 LaFayette lacrosse alumni (Class’ of 1962- 2010) showed up to play.

The 75+ spectators/friends/family members watched the action from the sidelines of the Grant Grimshaw fields. The first game featured our newest alumni (1990-2010). Action was fast paced as the crowd cheered as watched High School All-League and High School All-Americans effortlessly race up and down the field just like old days.

The second game featured the master alumni (1960-1990). This game began with the acknowledgement of 3 players from the original LaFayette HS team, Kingsley Lyons, Sherwin “Mister” Hill and Mike Smith and 2 players from the 1969 team Vern Jones and Sid Hill. To the delight of many, Mike even wore his old HS helmet! After 4 spirited quarters between the gold and green teams, referee Bill Hardy called, “Next goal wins!”

Fittingly, Kingsley Lyons from the original team was able to find a small crack in goalkeeper Tom Scofield’s (Class of 1968) armor to end a great day of lacrosse and camaraderie.

Organizer Mike Cotsonas (class of ’84) said of the event, “It was great having those guys from the 1960’s there. They stepped on the field to play and show the young ones they can still bring it 51 seasons later. Unbelievable.  And a great honor for the rest of us to have them there.”

The event would not have occurred without the help of so many people.  We like to thank Syracuse Tents & Events (Jerome LaZore '84) for donating the
tents/grills/tables/chairs for the picnic; the LaFayette Lacrosse Association for the burgers/dogs/buns and Tony Pizzuto & John Liddy for grilling; the LaFayette Lacrosse Association Ladies for selling t-shirts, shorts and other gear. And thanks to Tully’s own Bill Hardy who refereed all day and graciously donated his fees to the Mary Jo Kelly benefit.

Next year, please plan on attending the LaFayette Alumni game to help commemorate a great lacrosse tradition.   The event will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011, see you then!
