Onondaga Nation- On Tuesday November 20th, the award winning songstress BearClaw visited the Onondaga Nation School to share her songs with the students. Everyone loved her beautiful voice and her mix of Mohawk and English songs.
Audrey from the 5th grade said, “I liked her because she is the same nation and clan as me. Plus she is a good singer.”
BearClaw explained that her world at Akwesausnee was one of music. “Both my parents played instruments and there was a piano in the house,” she explained. “The Creator gives everyone a gift and mine was music. I would often find myself singing new melodies walking back from school.”
Those melodies have led her to creating songs about our Thanksgiving Address and to songs about her childhood. One song in particular, Rich Girl, earned her a Native American Grammy. BearClaw explains, “Growing up I was the youngest of 8 brothers and 6 sisters. We didn’t have a lot of money but I didn’t know it. I just knew I was so rich from the love I had from my family."
Judging from all of the toe tapping and smiles, everyone enjoyed her visit.
