Referees Needed
LaFayette Lacrosse
December 9, 2014

Longtime referee Rick McCormack is reaching out to the knowledgeable base that is the LaFayette and Onondaga Nation communities for interested applicants to become a high school lacrosse referee.

“There is definitely a shortage of referees out there,” said Rick McCormack.  “I know from my playing days at LaFayette HS (’75) that there are some extremely knowledgeable people who know the ins and outs of the game.”

Refereeing has changed over the past few years.  With the growth of the sport in other communities, there are now more high schools and therefore more JV and modified games which are in need of refs.  As the level of play increases, so does the speed of the game as many players are now focusing on lacrosse as their major sport. Athletes playing lacrosse are bigger and faster than before.

“I’ve been a referee for the past 12 years,” stated LaFayette All-County goal keeper McCormack. “The level and speed of play has definitely increased.  The high schools are beginning to recognize this and more and more that three referees are needed to properly call a game.”

Once a referee candidate proceeds through the training process, the referees will be assigned a veteran ref which they will work JV and modified games.  As their experience increases, referees will then be assigned high school varsity games.

McCormack added, “Once the season starts, you can be ref-ing 3 or 4 days a week or whatever your schedule will allow. It can get very busy.”

If you are interested in becoming a referee, please fill out the enclosed form and return it to Rick McCormack before January 20, 2015 to be registered for the Certification class.
