What happens when creativity, craftsmanship and inspiration from nature come together? LaFayette’s seventh- and eighth-grade students discovered the answer through a unique interdisciplinary project spanning Art, Technology, and Family and Consumer Science.

Working together across classes, students transformed found objects and natural materials into one-of-a-kind animal and insect sculptures. The project began with planning and designing their creatures, followed by collecting materials and bringing their ideas to life through construction.

Once their sculptures were complete, students developed stories for their creatures, giving each one a personality and a world of its own.

Throughout the project, students practiced collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, craftsmanship, and storytelling while making connections across multiple disciplines. 

Most importantly, students discovered that inspiration can be found just about anywhere, including in the natural world right outside their classroom door, if they take the time to look and see the possibilities create. The result? An imaginative collection of creatures that showcases both student creativity and the power of learning across classrooms.
