LaFayette Students Shine in Battle of the Books Competitions
Students across the LaFayette Central School District showcased their love of reading, teamwork and academic dedication during this year’s Battle of the Books competitions, earning top honors at regional levels.
The annual competition challenges students to read a selection of books over several months and work as teams to answer detailed questions about the stories. Students across multiple grade levels spent the fall and winter preparing for their respective competitions.
The Gumdrop Girls—Marlo Harris, Shea Crast, Midge Thayer, and Carolina Francis—delivered an exceptional performance at the regional competition, winning the 1st and 2nd grade Regional Battle of the Books without missing a single question. The team, coached by second grade teacher Maddy Murfitt, spent months studying eight selected titles since the fall. Their victory earned them the opportunity to represent Central New York at the upcoming Super Regional competition.
The 3rd and 4th grade team, Reader Things, also delivered an impressive showing at the regional level, earning second place. Team members Matvii Atamanchuk, Thomas Campbell, Jonathan-Paul Haynes, Declan Taylor and Kahlia Wilkerson were recognized for their strong collaboration and knowledge of the books.
Battle of the Books continues to be a beloved academic tradition that encourages students to explore literature, develop critical thinking skills and celebrate reading together.
