Budget Vote and BOE Election Scheduled for June 9, 2020

Budget Vote and Board of Education Election June 9, 2020

Update May 7 2020

Dear LaFayette Central School District Community:

On Friday May 1st, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order establishing the date and procedures for school district budget votes and board of education elections. Previously, Governor Cuomo had delayed school district votes, originally scheduled for May 19th, until after June 1st. The most recent executive order established the date for the budget vote and board of election for Tuesday June 9th.

Both the budget vote and board of education election will be conducted via absentee ballot. Candidates interested in running for the board of education must file a petition with the District Clerk by Monday May 11th at 5:00 PM. Under the recently issued executive order, there will be no minimum number of signatures that need to appear on the petition. Petitions, which are available now, can be obtained by contacting the District Clerk, Paula Hibbert, at 315-677-9728 or via email: phibbert@lafayetteschools.org

Comprised of seven school district residents elected by voters, the LaFayette Board of Education is the official policy-making body of the school district and is responsible for carrying out the laws and regulations pertaining to the education of children living within the district. The board adopts district policy, curriculum, programs of study, and approves the hiring of all personnel, as well as establishing the conditions of employment. The board is also responsible for maintaining district facilities, establishing an annual budget and setting a tax levy.

Three terms of office will expire on June 30, 2020. On June 9th, three candidates will be elected for three-year terms (July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2023). Board members are not financially compensated.

Individuals who are interested in learning more about serving on the board are invited to schedule an appointment with LaFayette CSD Superintendent Jeremy Belfield at jbelfield@lafayetteschools.org or 315-677-9728.
