Incident Social Media Post Sunday 2/26/23

Sunday February 26, 2023

Dear Families and Staff Members:

This evening, a school staff member was notified that a student at the LaFayette Big Picture School posted concerning messages on social media. It was reported that a student posted a picture of a handgun after posting a concerning message about a staff member. Our school safety plan was immediately put into action which involved notification to Onondaga Nation leaders and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s department.

Out of an abundance of precaution, the student has been disciplined for posting an inappropriate message on social media directed at a school staff member which was followed by a picture of a handgun. The investigation into this matter is ongoing and the family is cooperating with the investigation. At no time were any students or staff in danger nor do we feel there will be any imminent danger. We will have additional security at the LaFayette Big Picture School and Jr/Sr High School to help alleviate concerns from students or staff.

Safety and security are the most important aspect of what we do every day. Diligence and communication ensure the safety of the students and staff in our building. We appreciate the communication that occurred today that helped us maintain the safety of our school. We commend the individual who discovered the threat and immediately notified the teacher. This is a commendable act of “see something, say something”.

Notifications such as these can be very unsettling for children and parents. Our goal in informing you of such incidents is to be transparent and proactive in getting information out to our school community that may be useful in protecting the safety of our children.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Belfield
