Important Message from Superintendent Belfield Important Message from Superintendent Belfield: To: LaFayette CSD Parents and Families From: Jeremy Belfield, Superintendent of Schools RE: Toy Gun Reported at Onondaga Nation School Date: May 9, 2019 Dear Parents and Families: I am writing to inform you about a report of a plastic toy airsoft gun that was brought to school by an elementary student at the Onondaga Nation School. The student brought the plastic toy gun to school and showed it to two other students on the bus. I am sharing this information with all families in an effort to be fully transparent and to dispel any rumors surrounding this issue. Please be mindful that the student did not bring the toy gun to school with any malicious intent and students were not in danger. ECOS Team Organizes Earth Day Activities ECOS Team Organizes Earth Day Activities: Following spring break, members of the LaFayette Junior/Senior High School’s ECOS (Environmentally Conscious Organization of Students) club decided to shake off any post-break rust by participating in a series of eco-friendly Earth Day events throughout the week! Students were able to participate in a variety of "green" activities, including an Earth Day cleanup, creating environmental awareness posters and dioramas, and repurposing non-recyclable materials into planters to give them a “second life” outside of a landfill. By organizing a wide swath of events, the ECOS team gave students the opportunity to chase any (or all) of their passions. Participation in these events was not exculsivley its own reward, however. Operation Safe Stop Aims to Protect Students Operation Safe Stop Aims to Protect Students: On May 2, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department and the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute helped kick off “ Operation Safe Stop ” at the LaFayette Central School District. This statewide initiative aims to help better protect students by cutting down on incidents of drivers passing school buses that have their “stop” sign deployed.  It is estimated that a staggering 50,000 New York State motorists pass stopped school bus signs each day. A day before Operation Safe Stop was announced, new legislation was put into motion that will greatly increase the penalties for passing a stopped school bus sign. Operation Safe Stop May 2, 2019 Operation Safe Stop May 2, 2019: Good Morning, LaFayette CSD will host a press conference this morning at 10:00 AM at the LaFayette CSD Bus Garage with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department, the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute, and over 50 police agencies for Operation Safe Stop. You will notice a large police presence at Grimshaw Elementary near the bus garage for the press conference. "Cans 4 A Cure" Can Drive to be Held May 4: On Saturday, May 4 the LaFayette Central School District’s National Honor Society will be hosting its annual “Cans 4 A Cure” can drive. The drop off spot will be in the parking lot at Grimshaw Elementary, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to to the Golisano Children's Hospital. We hope to see you on May 4!
"Battle of the Books" Winners Emerge: Recently, a couple of LaFayette “Battle of the Books” teams took top honors in regional competition! At the outset, twelve teams (comprised of nearly 50 students from the third through sixth grades) competed in the local/school contest, answering Jeopardy-style questions based around 10 specific books. Each team had an adult coach to help them access the books through the library as they prepared for the contest.   The two LaFayette teams who won the school competition then went on to do “battle” in the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES regional contest. In honor of two Marine Corps Reservists In honor of two Marine Corps Reservists: GOVERNOR CUOMO DIRECTS FLAGS TO HALF-STAFF IN HONOR OF MARINE CORPS RESERVISTS KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN     Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today directed flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of two Marine Corps Reservists who were killed in Parwan Province, Afghanistan on April 8. Flags will be lowered from today until their interment. Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks, 25, of  Locust Valley, Nassau County, and Staff Sgt. Christopher K.A. Slutman, 43, who was a 15-year member of the FDNY, stationed at Ladder Company 23 in the South Bronx, were killed in an improvised explosive device attack while conducting combat operations along with a third Marine, Sgt. The Echoes program is a writing contest held for students in grades 6-8, and is considered the largest middle school writing competition in the United States. Board of Education Elections Board of Education Elections: School board elections and the budget vote have been delayed until at least June 1, 2020 because of the spread of coronavirus. The vote was originally scheduled for May 19, 2020. Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order on Monday, March 30, 2020. The order did not offer a specific date for the vote. We will be sure to pass along information as it is received. Voters to elect three board of education members in (Date TBD) LaFayette Central School District voters will choose three district residents to serve on the Board of Education. Candidates may be nominated only by petition and must collect at least 25 signatures from qualified school district voters to be placed on the ballot. Cuomo today directed flags to half-staff on all State government buildings in honor of New York Department of Transportation Maintenance Worker Dennis (Matt) Howe of Owego, Tioga County, who died from injuries sustained last Wednesday when a tractor trailer collided with a DOT truck in the work zone March 13 in Tioga County. Syracuse Cougars Capture First NYSPHSAA Championship Syracuse Cougars Capture First NYSPHSAA Championship: Congratulations to the Syracuse Cougars, who became the NYSPHSAA D-1 boys ice hockey state champions over the weekend. They defeated Suffern by a score of 4-2 , securing the state championship for the first time in franchise history with the victory. Extra congratulations go out to the team's LaFayette players, including:  Kyle Lamson Wyatt Weil Skariwate Papineau Kaleb Benedict Cameron Walsh Nelson Jones Aidan Griffin The Cougars finished a staggering 24-1-1 on the season. LaFayette Players Present LaFayette Players Present "The Little Mermaid" March 8 & 9: March is "Music in our Schools Month," and The LaFayette Players are celebrating by putting on a production of "The Little Mermaid" this weekend!
The production will be held at 7 p.m. on both March 8 and March 9, in the Junior/Senior High School auditorium. Tickets will cost $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults. There is a $30 group rate for immediate family members.
